Yesterday, December 10, 2009 AHII students discussed the final two chapters in Orwell's Animal Farm. Our discussion started with their impressions of the ending and if it was consistent with the plot. Then we evaluated what Orwell was saying to the reader about themes, such as power and corruption, knowledge and power, an uneducated or niave working class, or what types of propaganda or strategies of control were used to manipulate the working animals.

Today and yesterday AHI students discussed and then viewed some of the events or causes to the American Civil War. The film was episode I "The Cause" of the Civil War by Ken Burns. Today we talked about the significance of John Brown's raid on the arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia and the subsequent trial of John Brown. Additionally, we talked about the election of Abraham Lincoln and the secession of southern states as a result of that election.

AHI Extra Credit Question for December 14th--January1st: Your question is a rather straight forward one, but one that needs explanation. What do you think is the single most important event that contributed the most to the cause of the Civil War and more importantly, WHY? I gave them the essential data about the country, its size, ethnicity, and source of income. The types of government were quite varied as some didn't take the activity with a great deal of seriousness; however, most found that a republic with a mixed economy was the most favored option.

Tomorrow we will be looking at some major events during the Tet offensive and some of the legacies of U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

Today we reviewed notes on the contrast between Hamilton and Jefferson. Then we started a film on Thomas Jefferson. Students are looking for ways in which Jefferson was a man of contradictions. We were also to read pages 176-180 in text and answer questions from the handout given to students at the beginning of this unit.
